Very much matches up with my experiences as a phd student and later postdoc on why it is very important to talk to senior (and even junior) colleagues.

I think they touched on a lot of points that are critical to success. If you can't bench mark your progress or figure out what average looks like then how can you expect to excel.

You can but the process is harder when you attempt to navigate academia blind.
